Advanced Clinical Anesthesia Fellowship

The Advanced Clinical Anesthesia Fellowship is designed for the candidate that would like to gain more experience in all common aspects of general anesthesia practice, some of which will incorporate high-risk patients and high-risk procedures.
The fellowship is well suited to recent graduates that would like an additional year of experience prior to independent practice. It is also well suited to candidates wishing to integrate into the Canadian Healthcare system.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of the fellowship, the fellows will be able to provide safe perioperative care for patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical specialties that include Orthopedic, general, gynecological, Spine, hepatobiliary, urology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery as well as ambulatory and day-surgery anesthesia.
- As Victoria hospital is a tertiary care trauma center, particular experience in managing blunt and penetrating trauma will be gained during this fellowship.
- The fellows will be able to consolidate their clinical skills using the ultrasound for invasive monitoring (Arterial Line & CVP Line)
- Fellows will gain independence throughout the year and are expected to function independently by the end of the fellowship.
Assessment
The Fellowship Director will provide face-to-face feedback to fellows at 3-month intervals. The feedback will be based on:
- Daily and weekly assessments of performance by the supervising consultant.
- Feedback from the trainee (Residents and medical students)
Service Expectations
- The fellows will work at least 100 service days per year under supervision (subject to change according to department fellowship policies).
- Advanced clinical anesthesia fellows will be included in the on-call roster and will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotation basis.
Research and Education
Fellows interested in research are encouraged to pursue research opportunities under supervision, either joining research in progress or starting new projects. Academic time is offered to all fellows when necessary and in line with the department's clinical duties. Travel grants are available for fellows presenting at major conferences.
Clinical:
- Regular assignment to wide variety of surgical operating room lists.
- Pre-admission assessment clinic
- Out of the OR procedures
- Acute pain service
- Potential exposure to some subspecialty OR
- On-call duties
Education:
- Weekly teaching sessions are held Wednesdays at 7:30 covering various anesthesia topics
- Echocardiography lectures and case discussion rounds are done Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 7:00 and attendance is encouraged
- Subspecialty rounds are encouraged is encouraged but not mandatory
